Young Adult Literature as a Bridge to the Canon

The literary canon has remained virtually unchanged since the 1960s with "classic" texts often being so dissimilar from the experience of contemporary students that they are uninterested in reading them. I consider how young adult literature can be used in the classroom to help students connect with and become more interested in canonical texts. Example from student assignments are provided.
